This study is organized into modules with specific readings, Ted Talks and research assignments. Each module includes a website, Ted Talk, and a chapter from professional literature or a research article.

Each includes questions reflecting on the content of the information presented in the Module and how this information could be applied to their teaching practice.

Professional Reading (Optional): The Art and Science of Teaching. Robert Marzano (2007) (General Reference Chapter 2).
Academic Questions: Please answer with a minimum of 1 typed page (150 words) APA style double spaced.

Question 1- What adjustments to presenting instruction are required of teachers working with students who do not have access to the internet as opposed to students who do have access?

Module # 2: Healthy Brains Help Each Other

“Healthy Brains Help Each Other” is the theme of this module. How I see myself impacts how I learn. How you see me also impacts how you teach me. Relationships determine how I receive information and my executive functioning. This module explores the connections between brain health, brain functioning and students’ ability to successfully receive the information presented by their teachers.

Academic Questions: Please answer with a minimum of 1 typed page (150 words) APA style double spaced. Select 1 question only.

Question 1-After reading about the Harvard Moms Partnership, do you think a similar project would be successful in your school district? Why? Why not?

Question 2- Carson Byblow speaks in his Ted Talk about “mindset and how it changed his “metaperceptions”. Describe a scenario where a student you are familiar with (fictitious names only) could benefit from a brain shift to a growth mindset. How could you use this Ted talk to improve instruction?

Module # 3: Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy uses these principles: “Positive perspectives on parents and families, communication of high expectations, learning within the context of culture, student-centered instruction, culturally mediated instruction, reshaping the curriculum and teacher as facilitator.”

(Ladson-Billings) (1994).

Highlighting the advice and successes of minority engineers and mathematicians, this module provides real-life experiences for pedagogical reflection. A new approach to STEAM focusing on making learning contextual is also presented.
This module provides specific strategies to support learning while recognizing and incorporating the students’ cultural backgrounds.

Ted Talk: The key to Success? Grit by Angela Duckworth

https://youtu.be/_XOWsgMd5fA

Academic Questions: Please answer with a minimum of 1 typed page (150 words) APA style double spaced.

Question 1 After reading the information listed in the links for the Harvard Bok Center, which is most useful for instructing your students and why?

Question 2(a) For years we’ve heard about Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth and the Power of “Grit”. Please take the mini-self assessment for “grit” which is titled the “grit scale”. The “grit scale” is found using the link below. Record your results.

https://angeladuckworth.com

Q-2(b) Some educators compare our students’ academic school performance as a direct reflection of the person who teaches them. If that is true, how could the “grit” test you completed in question 1, impact your teaching? What could this “metaperception” improve learning in your classroom?

Metaperceptions, or beliefs about how other people perceive the self, are the implicit maps people use to navigate complex social environments. Are metaperceptions accurate? The answer to this question is complex and depends on several factors, such as how insight is measured, the attribute in question, and the social context. We first review several ways in which the accuracy of metaperceptions is typically conceptualized and measured. We then summarize for which attributes (e.g., intelligent, likeable) and in which contexts (e.g., among friends or coworkers) metaperceptions are accurate as well as for whom (e.g., personality traits, status) and in which situations. Next, we consider the process of metaperception and which sources of information lead people to form accurate beliefs about how others perceive them. Finally, we discuss future directions that may shed more light on when people know how others experience them and how to potentially improve this type of insight.
