Course Description:  The purpose of this professional development course is to empower educators with a comprehensive understanding of restorative practices and provide them with the tools necessary to integrate these principles into their classrooms.  Educators  will delve into the fundamental concepts of restorative practices, gaining practical insights and strategies for creating a supportive learning environment.  This course focuses on addressing Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs) scores within the context of restorative practices, equipping educators with diverse ways to handle each student’s needs.  

This course enhances classroom teaching effectiveness and supports improved student outcomes by introducing new knowledge in how to foster supportive, trauma-informed environments that promote empathy, positive relationships, and effective  conflict resolution. 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the fundamentals of restorative practices, their history, and their relevance in educational settings. 
  2. Cultivate a respectful learning environment by developing strategies to foster positive student-teaching relationships.
  3. Explore strategies to foster compassionate environments through trauma-informed restorative practices. 
  4. Develop skills to facilitate restorative conversations using affective statements.

Assignment #1: Introduction & Reasons for taking the course

  • Introduce yourself, where you teach, what you teach and how long you have been teaching and demographics of the students you teach.
  • Tell me about your family, pets, hobbies, anything that would help me know you better. 
  • Talk about the things you love about teaching. 
  • Discuss one of the challenges you are facing with your students. 
  • Share about your background information / knowledge about restorative practices
  • What are three things you hope to learn from this class?

Assignment #2: Restorative Practice

  • After Reading Chapter 1 in your own words explain what restorative practices mean. 
  • Identify three key principles that are important to creating a restorative culture. 
  • Describe one common misconception about restorative practices and explain why it is inaccurate. 
  • Reflect on your own history with disciplined and behavior management. What approaches have you experienced as a student or educator? 
  • Complete the question :”How restorative am I?”  Explain one area in which you are already restorative and one area you would like to improve. 
  • Describe two ways restorative practices could be woven into the school day. 

2-3 page reflection double spaced:  Google Doc provided

Assignment #3: Building Student Agency and Belonging

  • Read Chapter 2 Foundations of Respect 
  • Create a “Respect and Belonging Action Plan” for your classroom or school.  Include the following: 
    • 3 ways you currently demonstrate respect toward students
    • 3 ways you can strengthen student agency
    • 2 strategies for building student  voice and choice
    • 2 strategies for creating a greater sense of belonging.
    • Explain how teacher credibility influences relationships with students
    • Describe a situation in which a student may feel that they have little control or agency
    • Rewrite the situation to give the student greater voice, choice and responsibility. 

2-3 page action plan or one page visual plan with written explanations double spaced

Assignment #4: Creating Restorative Classroom Expectations.

  • Read Chapter 3: Establishing Expectations & Teaching for Engagement
  • Create a set of 4-6 classroom agreements that reflect restorative values. 
    • For each agreement:
      • State the expectation positively 
      • Explain why the expectation is important.
      • Identify how students will develop or maintain the expectation.
      • Describe how you will explicitly teach the expectation.
      • Explain how you will respond when the expectation is not followed.
      • Identify one strategy you will use to increase student engagement. 
    • EXAMPLE: 
    • Agreement: We listen when others are speaking
    • Why: Everyone deserves to feel heard and respected.
    • Student Agency: Students help determine what respectful listening looks and sounds like.
    • Teaching Strategy: Model, practice, and role-play active listening. 
  • Application:  Create a Classroom Restorative Agreement Poster that could actually be displayed in your classroom. ( create poster and screen shot or create a digital poster)

Assignment #6: The Power of Affective Statements

  • Read Chapter 4: Restorative Conversations Using Affective Statements
  • Rewrite each traditional teacher statement using an affective / restorative statement.  
    • Example: Traditional  :Stop talking.  You’re disrupting everyone.”
    • Example: Restorative: “I feel frustrated when side conversations continue because it makes it difficult for everyone to focus and learn.”
      • Create 5 additional examples involving situations such as:
        • A Student refuses to follow directions.
        • A student interrupts another student.
        • A student arrives late.
        • A student damages classroom property.
        • Two students are arguing
      • For each scenario:
        • Write a traditional punitive response.
        • Write the restorative response.
        • Explain why the restorative response is more effective.
  • Reflection:  What is the difference between holding students accountable and shaming students? 

3-5 page requirement double spaced using Google Doc Provided

Assignment #7: Restorative Conversation Role-Play

  • Read chapter 5: Restorative Conversations Using Impromptu Conversations 
  • Choose one realistic K-12 Classroom scenario involving student behavior or conflict.
    • Examples: 
      • Student refuses to complete an assignment.
      • Two students argue during class.
      • Students speak disrespectfully to the teacher.
      • Students repeatedly disrupt instruction.
      • Student excludes another student from a group.
      • Student use inappropriate language.
  • Develop a 5-step restorative conversation:  Conversation should include:
  • Opening the conversation
  • Identifying what happened
  • Exploring who was affected
  • Discussing responsibility
  • Determining what needs to happen next
  • Written script 
  • 3-5 minute video recording of role-play
  • What part of the conversation felt most natural?
  • What part was most difficult?
  • How did the conversation preserve the student’s dignity?
  • What would you change the next time?
  • Write the conversation as a script between the educator and student.  Role-play the conversation with a partner and submit either:

Assignment #8: Design & Facilitate a Restorative Circle

  • Read Chapter 6: Restorative Circles
  • Design a restorative circle that could be used with a K-12 group. Circle should include: 
    • Purpose:  What is the purpose of the circle?
    • Participants:  Who will participate? 
    • Opening: How will you welcome participants and establish a safe environment? 
    • Circle Agreements: Identify 4-5 agreements participants follow. 
    • Talking Piece: Explain how you will use the talking piece.
    • Circle Questions: Create 5 restorative questions/prompts (EXAMPLE: What helps you feel safe and respected?)
    • Closing: Explain how you will bring the circle to a meaningful conclusion. 
    • Follow-Up: Describe how you will determine whether the circle was successful.

Assignment #9 Final Product

  • Submit a Restorative Circle Plan that you could use in your work environment. 
  • Reflection Questions: 
    • What went well?
    • What was a challenge?
    • How did participants respond?
    • What did you learn about yourself as a facilitator?
    • What  would you change next time?
